I first met the Berle family in the summer of 2007 while doing research on Autism for a short documentary. I had been motivated to investigate this topic upon hearing some shocking statistics regarding children and autism in the United States: with some schools estimating 25% of students inflicted, the numbers were staggering, and I was shocked.

Of course there is a spectrum of different types of autistic, but 1 out of every 150 kids autistic? I was completely unaware of this. But the facts don’t lie.

So what is causing this increase in autism?

Vaccinations causing autism, mercury induced autism - extremely controversial proposals for those on both sides of the opinion scale, with even the autistic community divided on the topic.I would have loved to create an entire documentary on this issue alone, yet my guidelines were clear: no longer than eight minutes.

So, I decided to focus on Baxter’s recovery from autism, and the journey both he and his family undertook to get him where he is now.

The result, is Waking Up Baxter.
